Everyone loves crayons. They are relatively cheap, non-toxic, and full of possibilities. Give a kid some cool colors and a blank piece of paper, and watch their imaginations open up. Crayons, paints and building blocks are all part of open-ended toys that allow children to foster imagination, fine motor skills and even begin to grasp math concepts. When used in groups, they also help build social and problem solving skills.
Well, crayons just got a whole lot better. You may have seen glitter crayons or fun shaped crayons for sale either in a store or online shops like Etsy. This tutorial shows you how you can make them at home. You can take a normal box of crayons, and make an entire batch as gift bag toys for a birthday party, or as stocking stuffers during Christmas. Alternatively, you can take all the broken bits - you know, the ones your little darling refuses to use- and make up a "brand new" batch of fun crayons in different shapes.
The molds should be silicone to withstand the heat of an oven, though anything malleable and microwave safe can be used if you will be microwaving them. If you aren't certain how to start looking for silicone molds, you can try searching for silicone ice cube trays, pudding molds, or soap molds. I've seen little ducks, flowers, stars, cupcakes, and even small action figures. The possibilities are endless.
